Former Atlanta Braves Players

Opening Day for the Atlanta Braves was pushed back by weather. So that indicates that almost every other MLB team might be getting their 2024 season underway today.Rosters are essentially set now with only a few free agents remaining to be signed to begin the season.Even Adam Duvall was forced to wait until a week before the season began to find a job.But the Atlanta Braves decided to bring him back into an organization that highly values him, a decision that made his family very happy.

Out of the other players in the league, such as Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery, for example, some players stayed longer in the free-agent market than was expected. But what then of any Braves who had ever played at the time still looking for employment heading into the 2024 season?

Tommy La Stella

Tommy La Stella is now 35 and will be entering his MLB 11th season. He disappeared from baseball for a little bit, then came back to the game and made his Major League debut at 25 years of age with the Braves.

La Stella soon became a favorite of the fans, as a result of his dependable defensive play at second base and his annoying habit to stretch out every at-bat until he either got a hit or walked.

He was an All-Star in 2019 with the Los Angeles Angels but has struggled largely through these last two seasons with both the Giants and Mariners. Now aged 35 and with not many other paths to choose from, Tommy La Stella might well be looking at retiring. On the other hand, no one would be surprised at all if he signed up for a Major League team straight away and made valuable contributions.

Robbie Grossman

Grossman is still looking for a club, still at liberty. He worked for the Atlanta Braves in the second half of 2022. He played 46 games for the Braves, carrying home five and driving in twenty-two.

Grossman, who is 34, still has plenty of power from both sides of the plate. Since he is a switch hitter, any team will find him a valuable asset to have coming off the bench when circumstances dictate.

The ball broke in his favor last year, when in 2023 he played with the Texas Rangers and won a World Series ring. So if this were to be it for him, that would not be a bad way to go out.

Manny Pina

Manny Pina isn’t exactly known as an Atlanta Braves alumnus. But in 2022 he was indeed on the roster of Atlanta’s baseball team. Only their third-choice catcher at the time, so Pina played just five games for the Braves.

Pina has spent most of his career with the Milwaukee Brewers. He has posted a career batting average of .243 with 43 home runs and 149 runs batted in during 10 seasons played.

Given these respectable statistics, it’s somewhat unexpected that Pina hasn’t found any teams offering contracts for 2024 yet as a backup catcher. At his age and playing such a physically strenuous position, Pina may also be considering retirement.

Teams are always in need of someone who can play several positions in any given game. Any of these ex-Braves may yet find himself with a new job before he knows it.
