President Joe Biden’s re-election campaign has kicked off the election year with a significant fundraising achievement, amassing a combined total of $42 million in January for his re-election effort. This financial boost is attributed to the support from small-dollar donors, especially notable in the days following Donald Trump’s victory in the Iowa GOP caucuses, which marked the beginning of the Republican primary season.

The fundraising effort encompasses contributions to Biden’s official campaign, the Democratic National Committee (DNC), and other affiliated fundraising committees. By the end of January, these entities reported having a robust $130 million in their coffers. The Biden campaign highlighted this achievement as its best month for grassroots fundraising since the campaign’s inception, underscoring the momentum and growing support base behind Biden’s bid for a second term in office.

Julie Chavez Rodriguez, the campaign manager for Biden, emphasized the significance of the January fundraising haul. She stated that it demonstrates a strong show of strength and reflects the campaign’s successful grassroots fundraising program, which has been expanding steadily. Rodriguez contrasted the unity and focus of the Biden-Harris team with the division observed within the Republican ranks, pointing out that GOP efforts are split between opposing and supporting Donald Trump’s controversial agenda.

The detailed financial figures for the Biden campaign and the DNC will be disclosed in their monthly fundraising reports to the Federal Election Commission. Additional reports from the Biden Victory Fund and the Biden Action Fund, which are joint fundraising committees involving state Democratic parties, are expected in April. The campaign clarified that the announced $42 million figure includes contributions to all four entities, showcasing a unified fundraising strategy.

The fundraising success in January follows a strong finish to the previous year, with the Biden team ending December with $117 million on hand after raising $97 million in the final quarter of 2023. The campaign experienced a surge in online and small-dollar donations, particularly after Trump’s win in the Iowa caucuses, with contributions exceeding $1 million on three consecutive days post-Iowa and averaging $1 million a day towards the end of January.

In addition to financial contributions, the Biden campaign has been successful in expanding its digital footprint, adding one million new email addresses to its supporter list. This expansion has played a crucial role in facilitating 3 million contributions since Biden announced his intention to seek re-election last April.

As part of the ongoing fundraising efforts, President Biden is scheduled to travel to the West Coast for a series of high-dollar fundraising events in Los Angeles and the Bay Area. These events aim to further bolster the campaign’s financial resources. Additionally, the campaign continues to encourage small-dollar donations through innovative contests, including one offering participants a chance to attend a joint appearance by Biden and former Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton in late March. The fundraising achievements of the Biden campaign in January not only reflect the campaign’s organizational strength and the enthusiasm of its supporters but also set the stage for a competitive and well-resourced campaign as the 2024 election approaches.
