Camryn Manheim

Camryn Manheim is an American actress and born on 8 March 1961 in West Caldwell, New Jersey, United States of America who first caught the public eye on Broadway in 1994 with her off-Broadway one-woman show, “Wake Up, I’m Fat”. She is known for her roles as Ellenor Frutt on The Practice (1997–2004), Delia Banks for Ghost Whisperer (2006–2010), “Control” Person of Interest (2013–2015), Lieutenant Cosgrove in Stumptown (2019–2020) and Gladys Presley in the 2005 miniseries Elvis. In 2022 she starred as Kate Dixon on Law & Order instead. Manheim’s film credits include Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion (1997), Happiness (1998), What Planet Are You From? (2000), Scary Movie 3 (2003), Twisted (2004), Dark Water (2005), An Unfinished Life (2005) and Cop Car (2015).

Formative Years

Camryn Manheim was the child of Jewish parents. She was the daughter of Sylvia Manheim a teacher and Jerome Manheim–a professor of mathematics as well as Dean ad interim at California State University Long Beach for its School of Letters and Science. In the early years of her life, her family moved often because her father was taking new teaching positions. She spent part of her childhood in Michigan, another portion in Peoria, Illinois.

In the sixth grade she moved with her family to Southern California and settled down near Long Beach. There her school was Woodrow Wilson Classical High School. By acting in a Renaissance fair while still in high school, she became fascinated with performing. In 1984 Manheim graduated with a BFA from the University of California, Santa Cruz. In 1987 she received an MFA from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts Graduate Acting Program. Karl Manheim, her brother, is one of the professors at Loyola Law School.

 For some time Camryn Manheim worked in hospital signing as an interpreter. Her own sign language was used in the production of The Practice, in an episode of Law & Order, and as a child behavioral psychologist in the film Mercury Rising. In 1983, she made a guest appearance as a girl in an elevator in the post-courtroom scene at the beginning of “Sudden Impact.

She first gained attention for her one-woman show “Wake Up, I’m Fat”, which was performed at Classic Stage Company off-Broadway in 1994. The show was adapted into a book with the same title released by Broadway Books in 1999.
