Shares of Alphabet opened more than 7% higher on Monday morning after a report revealed that Apple seeks negotiations to license its Gemini system for future iPhones. Apple was up more than 2%.

Gemini is a suite of artificial intelligence tools introduced by Google, which creates everything from chatbots to code assistants.

According to a report by Bloomberg, Apple is negotiating with Alphabet’s Google subsidiary to allow the iPhone maker license and deliver its Gemini artificial intelligence (AI) platform to another generation of iPhones.

Bloomberg cited people familiar with the matter as saying the two tech giants were “in active negotiations” for Gemini to power certain new features expected to be built into the iPhone’s software later this year.

Apple’s next major change for the iPhone, iOS 18, is expected during June’s Worldwide Developers Conference. It is at this time of year the company usually speaks with developers about its plans for generative artificial intelligence and its latest iPhone software before those changes go live in the fall.

Apple CEO Tim Cook told shareholders at the company’s annual meeting in February that AI is a field in which Apple is “investing significantly”.

“I look forward to sharing with you the products of this research whenever they are ready: later this year, when we break new ground in Generative AI technology which offers potential to reshape our future as well. Best regards,” said Cook, using his own post on April 14th for emphasis.

According to Bloomberg, the company also had exploratory discussions with the nonprofit AI research group Open AI and might possibly use its model.Modesty is the cornerstone of growth.
