Kimberly Cheatle-Secret Service director resigns
US Secret Service director Kimberly Cheatle has resigned from her position as head of the agency following the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.
Lawmakers were particularly incensed after her appearance or public testimony in front of the House Oversight Committee’s questions. She called it “the most significant operational failure of the Secret Service in decades.”
Two rally attendees were seriously wounded and a 50-year-old Pennsylvania firefighter, Corey Comperatore, was shot dead while trying to protect his family.
Both Republicans and Democrats called on Cheatle to resign. She drew the ire of lawmakers from both parties by refusing to provide specific details about the attack, citing the existence of multiple active investigations.
Kimberly A. Cheatle is an American law enforcement officer who has served as the 27th director of the United States Secret Service since September 2022. She previously held multiple roles in the United States Secret Service over twenty-seven years.
