Elon Musk has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman, along with others, accusing them of deviating from the company’s original mission to develop artificial intelligence (AI) for the benefit of humanity. Musk, a co-founder of OpenAI in 2015, stepped down from the board in 2018 due to concerns about the potential dangers of AI. The lawsuit claims that OpenAI, despite professing its commitment to benefiting humanity, has become a closed-source subsidiary of Microsoft, focused on maximizing profits for the tech giant.

Musk’s lawyers argue that OpenAI’s shift towards prioritizing profits for Microsoft violates the initial agreement to develop artificial general intelligence (AGI) for the greater good. The lawsuit aims to compel OpenAI to adhere to its founding agreement and return to its original mission.

Microsoft, currently under EU antitrust scrutiny for its reported $13 billion investment in OpenAI, has recently announced a new partnership with Mistral AI, a French startup seen as Europe’s response to OpenAI. Musk’s legal action adds another layer of complexity to the ongoing developments in the AI industry.

The lawsuit brings together two influential tech leaders, Elon Musk and Sam Altman, amid heightened excitement and speculation surrounding the future of AI. OpenAI’s ChatGPT, launched in November 2022, gained widespread popularity as the fastest-growing consumer application, triggering the release of competing chatbots from major companies like Google parent Alphabet and Microsoft.

Both Musk and Altman have been prominent figures in the tech industry. Musk, known as the world’s richest person, oversees Tesla, SpaceX, and the X platform. Altman, a leading figure in the AI field, had a controversial departure from OpenAI in November of the previous year but later returned to the company. Musk, additionally, announced the establishment of his own AI company, xAI, in July the year before.
