NBA Ban for Jontay Porter Over Gaming Violation

The Toronto Raptors’ Toronto Two-Way player, Jontay Porter, has been permanently banned from the NBA. Porter was found to have leaked confidential league news to gamblers, limited his own playing time during one or more games for betting purposes, and bet on NBA games.

The league investigation discovered that on March 20 before the Raptors played against one individual he knew to be an NBA gambler, Porter himself divulged his illness. Porter then approached still another individual whom he associated with and knew also to be an NBA gambler, and bought an $80,000 parlay bet that would win him $1.1 million from an internet sports book — betting on the point well taken that Porter would perform badly in the March 20 game.

The league’s investigation revealed that at least one point of performance was artificially generated in one or more Raptors games by Porter himself for betting purposes. In the game on March 20, Porter played only three minutes, claiming illness. Due to betting on a player’s action inactivity in that match by the man whose $80,000 proposition bet was frozen, the sports book did not have to pay him anything.

Moreover, between January and March 2004, while traveling with either the Raptors or their NBA D-League team Toronto 905,porter placed at least 13 bets on NBA games. He did so at his associate’s account for betting online, and the bets ranged in size from $15 to $22,000, totaling $54,094. Net proceeds from these bets were $21,965, or $76,059 after receiver of bet takes his share. None of these Picks involved any game in which Porter was playing. Three of the bets were multi-game parlay bets (each of which included one Raptors game), in which Porter bet that the Raptors would lose. All three bets lost.

The bets concerning Porter’s game performance in the Raptors’ March 20 win were drawn to the attention of the NBA by licensed sport betting operators and by an organization which monitors betting markets legally.
