Providence Marathon
The Providence Marathon & Half Marathon, scheduled to take place on the 5th of May, has sadly been called off “owing to unexpected issues arising, such as the shutting of the Washington Bridge,” according to a spokesperson for the Providence Marathon.
Organizers notified Mayor Brett Smiley’s office of the cancellation early on Thursday. The marathon is sponsored by The Providence Journal.

“In spite of our best efforts working with local leaders, the 2024 Providence Marathon & Half Marathon has sadly been terminated due to unforeseen complications, including the closure of the Washington Bridge,” the marathon spokesperson stated. “Ensuring the safety and security of participants is our top priority, and while we were unable to guarantee an adequate route this year, we hope to welcome everyone again in 2025.”
The annual marathon along the scenic river drew thousands of devoted runners together once again last year, though far fewer than usual were able to complete the grueling course under the blazing summer sun. Over 5,700 hearty souls endured the punishing heat and humidity to push their bodies to the limit, joined in spirit by the friends and family cheering them on to the finish. Through their sweat and sacrifice, they raised a sizable sum that will help grant wishes to children coping with illnesses beyond their years.

For those signed up to test themselves against the unforgiving pavement and slopes in the coming months, options have been provided. They may delay their dreams of crossing the line until the safer season arrives without losing their invested entry. Alternatively, they can transfer their endurance to another challenging event put on by the same organization. And for those unwilling or unable to wait, a refund will be offered to help their goals find a new path.
