In a devastating incident on Friday, a 500-gallon underground propane tank was identified as a critical element in the explosion of a home in Sterling, Virginia, leading to the tragic death of a firefighter and injuries to several others. The Loudoun County Fire and Rescue team was dispatched to the residence around 7:40 p.m. following reports of a gas leak, as announced by Chief Keith Johnson during a press briefing.
Upon arrival, the team discovered that propane was leaking from the underground tank and had infiltrated the home. It was during their response to this hazardous situation that the explosion occurred, leading to what Fire and Rescue Assistant Chief of Operations James Williams described as “total devastation.” The aftermath of the explosion saw debris scattered extensively, affecting not only the site of the incident but also neighboring homes and areas well into the street.
Initial reports indicated that nine firefighters sustained injuries ranging from serious to less severe. However, subsequent updates from Loudoun County Fire revealed that the number of injured individuals had risen to at least 10, including two occupants of the home who suffered minor injuries. In a heartening show of bravery and dedication, firefighters managed to evacuate the occupants and their pets from the perilous situation. Despite their efforts, four first responders are still hospitalized, battling injuries sustained during the incident.

The firefighting community mourns the loss of Trevor Brown, 45, a dedicated member of the Sterling Volunteer Fire Company, who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Loudoun County Fire and Rescue extended their condolences through a heartfelt post on X, requesting that the privacy of Firefighter Brown’s family, friends, and colleagues be respected during this challenging time.
As investigations into the cause of the explosion continue, Chief Johnson remarked that while it is presumed to be related to propane, a definitive cause has yet to be determined. The Loudoun County Fire Marshal’s Office is leading the inquiry, with support from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Assistance in the investigation is also being provided by Washington Gas.
This tragedy has deeply affected the Sterling community, a locality of approximately 30,000 residents situated west of Washington, D.C.
